Wedding in Kenya for a foreign couple.......

Congratulation on your recent engagement!! We are happy you have now decided to hold your wedding in Kenya. Getting married in Kenya is fun and relatively simple and easy to carry out.
The validity of marriages in Kenya is based upon observance and adherence to all Marriage Laws of Kenya as stipulated in the current statues. In general, marriages which are legally performed on Kenyan soil are also legally valid in most other countries in the world.
The following areas are important to observe as they form the most basic, but crucial, requirements for a foreign couple contemplating on getting married in Kenya:-
- Valid passports (both persons)
- Valid tourist visa (both persons)
- Original birth certificates (both persons)
- A formal affidavit made by a solicitor or notary declaring that you are single and eligible to marry.
- Persons under 21 need written permission from their parents or guardians, in the form of an affidavit authorised by a solicitor or notary.
- If you are widowed, you will need to hand over your previous marriage certificate and spouses death certificate.
- If you are divorced, you will need to hand over a Decree of Absolute stamped by a duly recognized court of law.
- Residence in the country (Kenya) for twenty-one (21) days. If this is not possible, a Special Licence could be obtained beforehand by contacting the Registrar's Office in Kenya.
All non-Kenyans must get married under Cap 150 of The Marriages Act. Most churches apply The African Christian Marriage & Divorce Act Cap 151, which does not apply to non-Kenyans. In this instance, a marriage involving non-African parties under Cap 151 is NULL & VOID and therefore not legal.

The logistics
Legal requirements can change at short notice and it is important to have your paperwork prepared well in advance. Some documents cannot be obtained until closer to the date, ie, within three months of the wedding date. Advance planning is critical as it can take some time to confirm the availability of a priest or registrar. You particularly need to plan well in advance for a church wedding. For comprehensive details on how you and your fiance can easily plan for your Kenya wedding, call us on +254 712 918 589 or Landline: +254 2020 392 84 Monday to Friday between 0830 hrs - 1830 hrs and Saturday from 0900 - 1400 hrs (EAT)** or click here to send us an enquiry email.
